Step by step

1. Give a song some lyrics

   Put an .lrc lyrics file next to the song, with the same name (for example Hallelujah.mp3 and Hallelujah.lrc). If the file has timings, the current line lights up as the song plays. A file without timings is shown as plain text. Lyrics saved inside the song file are used when there is no .lrc file. Beebo never downloads lyrics from the internet.

2. Open Music in a browser and play a song

   Open your Beebo address in a browser, choose Music, open an album and play a song. Use a secure address if you want to record (see below).

   What you’ll see: A bar at the bottom with the song, previous and next buttons, a lyrics button and, in the next release, a microphone button.

3. Open the lyrics

   Press the lyrics button (the memo icon). The panel shows the words and scrolls with the song.

   What you’ll see: The current line is brighter than the others.

4. Record yourself

   Press Record yourself (the microphone). Two options sit beside it: Include video (webcam), which is off unless you tick it, and Include the backing track, which is on unless you untick it. The browser asks permission to use your microphone (and camera, if you ticked video); choose Allow.

   What you’ll see: A red button that says Stop recording, and “Recording… 0:12” counting up. With the webcam on, a small picture of you appears in the corner.

5. Stop and find it again

   Press Stop recording, or let the song end. Recording also stops if you skip to another song. Open My recordings (the studio-microphone button) to play or delete a recording.

   What you’ll see: “Saved. Find it under My recordings.” Each recording lists the song, date, audio or video, length and size.

Why the microphone needs https (or localhost)

Web browsers only let a page use the microphone or camera when the page is secure: an https:// address, or the same computer at localhost. Your Beebo PC’s everyday home address, like http://192.168.1.50:47811, is not secure, so on other devices the browser will not offer the microphone and Beebo says “Recording needs a secure (https) connection.” This is a browser rule, not something Beebo can switch off.

• On the Beebo PC itself, open http://localhost:47811 in a browser. Browsers treat localhost as secure.
• On other devices, use an https address for your Beebo. The Secure connection (HTTPS) section in Settings sets up HTTPS for the web address you type there. We have not confirmed that recording works through the yourname.beebo.tv address, so treat that as untested.
• If the browser says the microphone is blocked, allow it for that site in the browser’s address-bar menu and try again.

Where recordings go

• A recording is uploaded to your Beebo PC and saved there, beside Beebo’s settings, under your account. The recordings list shows only your own, and only you can play or delete them through Beebo.
• They are ordinary files on that PC, so whoever controls the PC can technically reach them. Do not record anything you would not want the PC’s owner to be able to find.
• Each person can keep up to 200 recordings, and each can be up to 512 MB. Deleting a recording cannot be undone.
• The webcam is only used if you tick Include video, and only while you are recording.
