Sound and audio options
The player’s Quality sheet gets a Sound section: choose surround or stereo, focus on dialogue, tame loud scenes at night, level volume between titles and fix lip-sync. Today you can already pick a different soundtrack; the new options arrive in the next release.
Beta · next release Status: The Sound section is built and tested but is not in the current downloads (Windows 0.1.57, Android 1.38). It has not been tried on real receivers, TVs or across all browsers. Picking an audio track and the picture quality work today.
Available today
While something is playing, the gear button opens a sheet with Quality, Audio and Subtitles. If a file has more than one soundtrack, they are all listed with the language, the number of speakers and the sound format. See Quality, audio and subtitles.
Step by step
-
Open the Sound section
In the web player, or the Android and TV player, open the gear button and find Sound in the Quality & audio sheet.
What you’ll see: A line saying what is playing, in plain words, for example “Stereo (mixed down from 5.1) · AAC” or “Surround 5.1 · Dolby Digital”.

-
Choose the sound mode
Auto (the default) asks for surround only when your device says it can play it. Stereo mixes surround down to two speakers. Surround keeps 5.1 where your device can play it, using Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby Digital, or AAC 5.1.
-
Choose how surround folds to stereo
Standard is a proper mix-down with a limiter so loud scenes do not clip. Dialogue focus lifts the centre channel, where speech usually lives, and lowers the effects and bass.
-
Night mode and volume levelling
Night mode gently compresses the difference between loud and quiet, so explosions and whispers are closer in volume. Volume levelling evens out the loudness between titles. Levelling takes more processing on the PC (roughly a third of a processor core for 5.1 on our test PC), so it is off by default and the sheet says what it costs.
-
Boost dialogue and fix lip-sync
In the browser player, Dialogue boost adds 0 to 6 dB through a soft limiter. Audio delay shifts the sound from 500 ms earlier to 500 ms later. On Android, delay comes in five steps and is made by the PC. Boost and later sound are made in the browser where possible, so they need no conversion.
-
Android and TV: HDMI passthrough
The Android sheet adds HDMI passthrough: Auto / Off. On Auto, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS and TrueHD go to a receiver as they are when the device says it can take them. Off makes the phone or TV decode them. The sheet then says what actually reached the output, read from the device, for example “Sent to your TV or receiver as Dolby Digital Plus (5.1), undecoded”.
What you’ll see: Sound choices are saved per account with your other playback settings. Passthrough is saved on the device.
What it does and does not claim
- Only what it can play. DTS, TrueHD, Opus and FLAC soundtracks are always converted by the PC when a phone or browser cannot play them. Seven-channel sound is folded to 5.1, not dropped.
- No object audio. Beebo does not keep Dolby Atmos or DTS:X, and it never labels a conversion as either. The words in the sheet describe what you are really getting, including “converted from DTS”.
- Copying when nothing needs doing. If your device can play the file’s Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus or AAC (up to 6 channels) and you have not asked for night mode, levelling or delay, the sound is copied untouched and only the picture is converted.
- Music. Beebo reads ReplayGain tags in your music files and levels loudness without re-encoding or changing the files. Songs with no tag are left alone.
- Not yet verified on real receivers and TVs, on every browser’s handling of multichannel HLS, or on a TV remote. Tell us what works for you.
If something goes wrong
I chose surround and hear stereo
Your device or browser did not report that it can play multichannel sound, or a headset is connected (a Bluetooth or wired headset always means stereo). Check the line at the top of the Sound section, which says what is being played.
Conversion makes my PC busy
Levelling, night mode, delay and surround all ask the PC to convert while you watch. Turn off what you do not need. See the encoder choices in Settings, in the section about quality choices for phones, TVs and browsers.
Dialogue is out of sync
Try Audio delay. If a positive delay does nothing in Safari or Android Chrome, that is expected: those browsers play the stream themselves, so the PC makes the delay instead.
I do not see a Sound section
It arrives with the release after Windows 0.1.57 and Android 1.38. Check What’s new.
